Oboist Hsuan-Fong Chen (pronounced “SHUan-fong”) is a New York City–based musician whose career spans Broadway, orchestral performance, contemporary music, and arts administration. She currently holds the oboe and English horn chair for the Broadway revival of Ragtime at Lincoln Center. Her Broadway credits also include serving as oboist for the Broadway production of Rocktopia and substitute performances in Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera, and Camelot at Lincoln Center.
Ms. Chen has performed with many of New York’s leading ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theatre Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, The Knights, and Novus NY. She performs regularly with Novus NY at Trinity Church Wall Street, as well as with Rocket City New Music, Talea Ensemble, Metropolis Ensemble, and the Orchestra of the League of Composers. Her contemporary music work includes the world premiere of Augusta Read Thomas’s Bebop Riddle V and the theatrical collaboration Watch Night, directed by Tony Award-winning choreographer/director Bill T. Jones.
A dedicated educator and arts leader, Ms. Chen serves as oboe faculty at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, CUNY, and previously taught at The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program and Pre-College Division. She is also Personnel Manager for Rocket City New Music.
A native of Taiwan, Ms. Chen holds degrees from The Juilliard School, Yale School of Music, and Manhattan School of Music.
